Migraines: Healing and Prevention Through Diet and Supplements
Migraine selfies are apparently a thing now. One thing is for certain, for the 37 million Americans that suffer from them, migraines are no joking matter. If you follow me on Facebook, you’ll know that I follow a more natural approach to health issues any time they’re available. My mother long knew of the triggers that effected her migraines, but never knew of foods that would help them. Do you? Keep in mind that while you and your mother may share the propensity to have migraines, your triggers may be different. Tracking your own triggers in a diary is the most helpful tool you can use. Here are my top tips of what to avoid and what to ingest.
What to Avoid
- Skipping meals. While it’s true that some foods will bring on a migraine, not eating enough will also trigger a migraine, especially in women.
- Tyramine. Foods that contain tyramine include aged cheeses, red wine and other alcoholic beverages, and some processed meats should be avoided. Vegan-migraine sufferers should take care not to ingest soy products including miso soup, bean curd, or tofu as well as certain beans like fava. Avocados and pineapple are also high in tyramine. For a more extensive list, check out this article from Livestrong.
- Nitrates and their counterparts, nitrites. Aged and processed meats and cheeses and even vegetables have been known to contain nitrates and nitrites which have been shown to trigger migraines.
- Citrus fruits. While studies have been mixed, many migraine sufferers have noted that citrus has been known to set off a migraine.
Consume in Moderation
- Caffeine. If you are a migraine sufferer, drink caffeinated beverages in small quantities (less than 12 ounces a day). Drinking too much can bring on a migraine. Also, if you don’t consume it often, caffeine can help reduce a migraine due to it’s pain relieving effects.
- Chocolate, nuts, and avocados. Like citrus, these three are among foods that have been long cited by migraine sufferers as triggering migraines. However, all are rich in magnesium which has been to known to help migraines and relax muscle tension. One study cited that migraines were reduced 41% with magnesium supplementation. Avocados are, however, high in tyramine, so be sure to keep watch after consuming. If you continually get a headache after eating them, it’s probably a good bet that it’s a trigger for you.
- Butterbur. While this remedy has shown success in American and German studies by up to 48%, I list it here to consume in moderation as it has the potential to damage your liver.
What to Consume
- Water. Getting dehydrated has been shown to trigger migraines. Be sure to get at least 6–8 glasses a day. Add lemon or a pinch of salt to get added electrolytes. Try drinking sole (pronounced so-lay) to increase hydration. Find out more about sole and how to make it.
- Red meat. While aged meats are a common trigger for migraine sufferers, eating grass-fed lean beef can help prevent these excruciating headaches. Studies have shown that CoQ10 and Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), found in red meat, can prevent migraines, so much so that they’ve been endorsed by the American Academy of Neurology and the Canadian Headache Society. Riboflavin, otherwise known as vitamin B2, not only helps prevent migraines, but it also helps reduce the intensity, frequency, and duration of these headaches.
- Eggs. Similar to red meat, eggs provide much needed vitamin B2 to our diets. One egg has as much as 24% of our daily needs of vitamin B2.
- Dark, leafy greens. Magnesium is found in dark, leafy greens and is known to help with migraines. Not only is spinach a good source of magnesium, but this leafy green, in particular has both vitamin B2 as well as B6 and omega-3’s. All of which have been shown to help with migraines.
- Cannabidiol (CBD). New studies are emerging on cannabinoids, specifically cannabinoid deficiency, playing a role in the lives of migraine sufferers. Supplementing with CBD has shown promise. I have testimonials from people whom have used both the isolate and full spectrum CBD and have had tons of success.
Do any of these help your migraines or are there triggers I didn’t list? Let me know. I’d love to hear from you.
Delta-8: What is it?
Maybe you’ve heard of Delta-8 in passing… maybe you’ve never heard it before at all. Or maybe you’re a Delta-8 scholar (I bet you could teach me a few things). Where ever you fall on that spectrum of knowledge, I’m going to drop what I know about Delta-8… and give you the low down as I understand it. Feel free to drop me a line. I may include it your email in an update to the site/this article.
Droppin’ Knowledge
Delta-8 is a cannabinoid found in hemp, marijuana’s sister plant. It can give you a high like THC, and it tends to be less potent. Do you live in a state that doesn’t allow marijuana? Delta-8 is a great way to experience some of the effects of THC, although in a more mild form. Some people, like me, may even prefer the more mild effect of this cannabinoid to THC (plus THC is illegal in my state).
What Does Delta-8 Do?
Many people who use Delta-8 report that it has the same effects as THC, including happiness, uplifted feelings, and relief of pain. It has also reportedly helped with insomnia.

Shaving has never been better…
When I purchased this shaving cream many moons ago, I had no idea that I would love it so much. My legs feel smoother and very soft and this scent is so light. It can also be used as a conditioner and sometimes I just put a little in my hair to have that scent uplift me. Try Pure Romance Shave Cream in Truly Sexy Flirt.
Want an even better shave? Use Billie Razors. Billie is a female-first shave and body brand that’s putting an end to the Pink Tax on razors. By spreading the word about The Pink Tax Rebate (no purchases necessary) we get up to a $20 credit to spend on Billie razors and body care. Let’s do this!
16 Ways to Fight Inflammation
I’ve had lupus for 7 years now and struggle with inflammation. I know how it can be difficult to do some of the below because we’re human and change can be difficult. But I promise you, it is so worth it!
Your immune system protects you from germs and other foreign substances that could make you sick by making parts of your body heat up and swell. However, sometimes it goes too far. That’s when such inflammation become chronic as a response to stress, junk food, or other lifestyle triggers. This chronic inflammation is associated with many serious health issues, including diabetes, heart disease, certain cancers, arthritis, fatigue, and depression. To reduce your risk, you may need to change your diet and other daily practices. Start with these ideas for following an anti-inflammatory lifestyle.
Food as Medicine
- Focus on plants. Most vegetables and fruits are rich in protective compounds like antioxidants and polyphenols. Load up on kale, berries, and citrus fruit. Some vegetables like asparagus and sweet potatoes also serve as prebiotics that help your gut and lower inflammation. Incorporate turmeric and ginger into your food as they reduce inflammation.
- Limit refined carbohydrates. Because foods like white bread and snack cakes have been stripped of fiber and nutrients, they encourage chronic inflammation and weight gain. Steer clear of these as much as possible.
- Steam and grill. How you cook is as important as what you cook. Instead of frying with oil, try steaming with water or grilling with dry heat.
- Drink coffee. Drinking coffee in moderation can provide beneficial polyphenols. Be careful what you pair with your coffee though. Those flavored coffee creamers are full of artificial thickening agents and sweeteners.
- Add garlic*. Many natural seasonings have anti-inflammatory properties. Spread roasted garlic on bread or add it to mashed potatoes and homemade pizza. *Be careful if you have lupus as garlic has been listed as one of the foods that can cause flare ups. Always do what is best for you.
- Choose healthy fats. Not all fats are created equal. Monounsaturated and omega-3 fats help to decrease inflammation. Good sources include olive oil, nuts, and fatty fish. By contrast, saturated fats aggravate inflammation, so go easy on the red meat and whole fat dairy products. Avoid trans fats.
Other Lifestyle Changes to Reduce Inflammation
- Lose weight. While you can experience chronic inflammation even if you’re thin, maintaining a healthy weight makes you less vulnerable.
- Exercise regularly. I know this can be difficult if you already deal with chronic pain and inflammation, so be sure to discuss with your doctor which kind of exercise is best for you. Walking and yoga (especially restorative yoga) are better for those who already suffer from inflammation.
- Stay hydrated. Water is essential to life, so be sure to drink up. Quench your thirst with plain water and tea instead of soda and juice.
- Brush and floss. Bacteria from your mouth and gums can travel to the rest of your body. Aim to brush and floss for at least 2 minutes twice each day.
- Use natural cleansers. Check the labels on your household cleaners and personal beauty products. You may be able to avoid potential toxins by buying organic brands or using plain vinegar and baking soda.
- Quit smoking and limit alcohol. Tobacco and alcohol aggravate inflammation. Many adults need more than one attempt to become tobacco-free, and combining nicotine therapy with counseling may lead to success this time. If you need help with either kicking the nicotine or alcohol, be sure to reach out to someone.
- Check your medication. Some over-the-counter and prescription drugs have side effects that reduce inflammation. If your doctor recommends that you take aspirin daily or prescribes statins to lower your cholesterol, you can consider this a bonus.
- Add supplements. Supplements of turmeric, ginger, CBD, and fish oils help reduce inflammation. Be sure to check with your doctor for any contraindications to medications you may currently take.
- Sleep well. Most adults need about 8 hours sleep to keep their minds and bodies strong. Go to bed and wake up on consistent schedule and keep your bedroom dark and quiet.
- Relax and refresh. Managing stress plays a major role. Find a relaxation practice that works for you such as daily meditation or taking long walks. You can reduce chronic inflammation by watching what you eat and drink and making other positive lifestyle choices. Protect your well-being and support healthy aging by bringing chronic inflammation under control.
You can manage your inflammation. Start out slow adding one thing at a time. Please be sure to check with your doctor before adding any supplements or exercise to your daily routine. Here’s to better health for us all!
This little bottle makes me feel amazing… Find out why!
I did a thing… really it was just to get products I already used at a discount, but I figured I would share my favorites with you on here. And then, I found out I can become a certified in sexual health and wellness. Well, my goal is to help people and so I decided to do it. So, I’m working on that class right now. But, I’m rambling as usual.
So, here in this little bottle of Basic Instinct is an amazing product!. It’s not terribly expensive for as long as it lasts either. But what it does is it makes me feel better. My mood is elevated, I feel a bit more confident, and an overall general feeling of goodness. I can’t help not put this on everyday and sometimes again later that evening. Why does it elevate mood and just feel so awesome?! It’s the pheromones! Pheromones not only help you attract the opposite sex, but they can elevate your own mood. There’s even a study that says they can banish PMS! That’s pretty phenomenal if you ask me.
In this day and age, I’m willing to do everything to make me feel better. Self care is so important for our hectic lifestyles. We need to unplug more often and do those things that make us feel good. So, if a perfume roll on (I hate to use the word perfume because that denotes a strong scent to me)… if a perfume roll on helps you feel good, by all means do it. Basic Instinct is not strong smelling and it changes with your own body chemistry so everyone who uses it will have a different scent. Get yours and see what your scent is like! Mine almost smells like baby powder or a fresh clean scent.
What a Bundle?!
I wish I had had this on hand when I went to the mountains a few weeks ago. For 3 days we hiked and went swimming in the creek nearby. Hiking is a love of mine, and while my kids don’t really love it, they enjoy the sights and the adventures. Oh, and they love giving their mom rocks (of course I’ve loved rocks and geology since I was a teenager). I once even brought home this rock, I believe it’s granite, home from a trip to Colorado and Independence Pass. It looked like a potato to me. I stuck that rock into my pocket book, not thinking about it. On our way to board the plane, I placed my purse on the conveyor belt and was promptly asked to open my purse. Boy, was I embarrassed?!
I digress… I was talking about my trip to the mountains a few weeks ago. Well, for three days I hiked and swam with no injuries or issues. But on the last morning we were there, I was rounding up the kids, packing things, and running around the efficiency barefoot (as I often do). I asked my oldest son, a 6’1″ 12 year old to do something. All of a sudden he was next to me and I turned and hit my pinky toe on his size 13 shoe, while he was in them. I dislocated my toe and broke it at the same time.
Well, being the DIY-er, I tried to reset it myself. It didn’t hurt that bad and I didn’t want to go to the hospital. I wasn’t driving anyhow, so that wasn’t an issue and it was my left foot too. I couldn’t reset it. I thought maybe the swelling was part of the problem. We proceeded to head home and as time marched on (and seemingly over my toe), I made the decision to go to the hospital near our home. We also would have someone to watch the children that way and I would have emotional support. It took the doctor about a dozen or so tries to get that little piggy back into “home.”
How does that relate to this bundle? Well, with the arnica roller, would have reduced bruising and helped with pain, the pain roller would have also helped with pain. Lotion for sore muscles from all that hiking, and then the tasty S’mores CBD for the anxiety of sitting in a full ER with possible COVID-19 patients. It’s always good to be prepared and this Summer Campin’ kit would have certainly done the trick. Looking for other great VIP bundles?
